Antique 1887 Holy Bible Parallel Edition Large Embossed Leather Cover, Color Illustrations

A VERY LARGE - The Holy Bible, The Parallel Edition Contains the Authorized and Revised Version of Old And New Testaments, The Authorized and Revised Versions Translated out of the Original Tongues.

Published by A.J. Holman Company, Philadelphia - Copyright is unknown since the first several pages were missing when the book arrived to me.

IMPORTANT INFO: I've printed copies of the first few pages (and added to the front signature as you can see in the pictures). These pages match the Holman printed versions from the 1887s (but the copies are cardstock and not front to back prints). They match the page numbers used by Holman bibles from the era but I cannot assure you of the correct date of publication. Inside, the columns of the bible indicate revisions from the 1611 version to the 1881 edition (in pic).

Makes a great display piece or decor item for home or office.

Thick, sculptured, full leather covers with richly detailed, gilt, embossed pictorial decoration and lettering, heavily beveled boards; worn gilt edges all around. Lots of illustrations, mostly B/W but quite a few in color as seen in the pictures.

The Marriage page is empty but Deaths and Births pages have a few names filled out as well. Photo holders are in good overall shape (no photos with the bible). The rest of the pages are suitable for reading but areas of slight browning of the old paper around the edges. However, the pages are not brittle.

Contains Old and New Testaments along with other works like History of the Books of the Old and New Testaments along with color and black and white illustrations. Also, the book contains various indexes, tables, lists, concordance with religious instructions.

Size = approx. 13"x 11" x 5"

Condition: Very Good condition after rework: Strip of recycled leather used on front cover to reattach spine and front/back covers. Some leather has worn around the edges, missing leather on corners and those areas were painted to keep the board underneath in good condition. This item is over 135 years old and not properly stored in the past. Spine leather is in pretty good shape despite lack of oil conditioning over the years (common with such bibles). I've used new mull attached to the front and back covers to reinforce the covers which should provide years of use.

Work Completed: As scene in pictures, I've attached leather strip (from repurposed leather coat) to reinforce the split between covers and spine. A new mull was attached to the signatures and reinforced to the covers which was detached when received. The first few pagers were re-inserted into the mull using Japanese paper and thread. Also, I've added new inside covers (seen in pic). All work is done using archival quality neutral ph adhesives, paper and/or cotton along with archival tape. On the first few pages are copies of original pages reattached to the signature (shown in pics). Contains the original head and foot bands.
