Rare Antique ca1872 Large Leather Holy Bible Clasped Illustrated Gold Leaf Embossed

Unusual King James version Bible with a fairly rare publisher in USA. This antique large book is a Holy Bible Edition with Old and New Testaments - A complete concordance with pictures, maps, etc. Large Quarto Size Book with Leather Cover and Gilding plus two beautiful clasps. Thick, sculptured, full leather covers are richly detailed, with gold leaf embossed designs on the beveled boards; worn gilt edges all around. This Bible contains filled in Marriage, Births, Deaths, etc. pages (the Colt family). No presentation page. Also, the original fold out map is inside.

Published by J. R. Foster Company, Pittsburgh. Only Copyrights show on pictures 1872 (see pic) so dating the book by that date.

This was probably printed by Holman Company given the style inside along with the structure of the book. Please be aware, the size/style ran from 1870s to 1890s on this type of bible from Holman. Holman was one of the largest publishers during the time and frequently made books for other companies.

The Bible contains the authorized and revised versions of the Old and New Testaments. It has the The Books of the Bible, Apocrypha, Dictionary, Biographical and Historical information along with nice pictures throughout in Black and White with a few color pages.

Size (roughly): 13"x 10"x 4.5".

Condition: Very Good condition. Inside paper is suitable for reading, minimal darkening of the paper. As shown in example pictures that pages are in good shape. Contains the original end papers on front and back.

As mentioned earlier, there is some strong wearing on cover gilding but the covers are cleaned and conditioned. There is a residue from someone using duct tape to attached the covers at some point (minor showing only along the edge of the new leather strips - see pictures)

Repair work: Reattached both covers with leather strips and attachment to the mull (see pictures). Cleaned and conditioned the leather to bring out the gold embellishments. Touches of leather dye used on corners.
